Singapore devoting US$26 million to beef up Changi

Authorities in Singapore announced on 1 July they would spend upwards of US$26 million to beef up productivity at the city-state’s Changi airport to provide a new communications system and provide more self-service processes for passengers to “reduce reliance on manpower”. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) said it would spend S$20 million (US$14.8 million) to roll out its Smart Apron initiative that would include an airport-wide Wi-Fi network covering 190 hectares – larger than Singapore’s iconic Gardens by the Bay – that will cover all aircraft stands at Terminals 1 to 4 as well as remote and cargo aircraft stands.

Gulfstream G280 sets record

Gulfstream Aerospace announced that its super mid-sized G280 set a speed record between Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Luton, England, completing the flight in seven hours and boosting the aircraft’s record-setting tally to 54. The aircraft departed Gerald R. Ford International Airport near Grand Rapids at 7:43 a.m. local time and arrived at London Luton Airport at 7:43 p.m. local time, completing the 3,377-nautical-mile/6,254-kilometer journey at an average speed of Mach 0.82.

Malaysia Airlines names new CEO

Malaysia Airlines has promoted its chief operating officer Peter Bellew to the CEO’s seat to replace embattled Christoph Mueller, the airline’s main shareholder, state investment agency Khazanah Nasional announced this week. Khazanah said in a statement that Bellew's appointment will ensure "continuity and further progress" as the airline tries to restructure itself following several years of financial challenges that included the loss of two airplnes.

Global Jet Capital sees uptick in Indian bizav market

US business jet leasing specialist Global Jet Capital said it expects demand for business aviation in India to increase as a result of the country’s strong economic growth. Officials from the company are currently visiting India to drum up business from prospective clients and said most of the interest expressed there is from people interested in midsize to large-size cabins. At least 70 aircraft in those categories have been delivered to India within the last decade, Global Jet Capital said, with a combined value of US$3.5 billion.
