Mr Willie Walsh
Director General of International Air Transport Association

We are delighted to partner with the Singapore Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore to co-organize the Changi Aviation Summit, held in conjunction with the Singapore Airshow. Aviation is an important industry that should be a strategic focus for all governments. It brings value to the economy at all levels, supporting individual livelihoods and growing prosperity by connecting communities.

That is not to say that the Asia Pacific region does not face challenges in delivering the global connectivity on which so much depends. Operating an airline is a tough business to be in. Despite aggregate profitability of $41 billion, global airlines are expected to earn just $7.9 per passenger in 2026. It is even tougher for airlines based in the Asia-Pacific region, which are expected to see $6.6 billion in profits or $3.2 per passenger.

Along with building more sustainably profitable businesses, airlines also face the enormous challenge of achieving environmental sustainability. Decarbonizing flying has no easy answers. But the way forward with sustainable aviation fuel, technological innovation, efficiency gains and carbon capture/offsetting is clear for both governments and industry. There is no doubt in the airline industry’s determination to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Hard work, smart investments and supportive policies will get us there.

This year’s Changi Aviation Summit is a timely opportunity for governments, regulators and airlines to engage on these and other critical industry issues.

I look forward to discussing these issues at the Summit and wish all participants and visitors every success at the Singapore Airshow 2026.
